When you're learning to surf, one of the most important things isn't how fast you can pop up or how many waves you catch — it's understanding surf etiquette.
Surf etiquette helps keep everyone safe and makes the experience more enjoyable for everyone in the water.
Don't Drop In
If someone is already riding a wave, don't take off on the same wave in front of them.
As a general rule, the surfer closest to where the wave is breaking has priority.
Don't Snake
Snaking is when you paddle around another surfer to steal priority on a wave.
It's one of the quickest ways to annoy people in the lineup.
Hold On To Your Board
Your board can become dangerous if it gets loose.
If possible, hold onto it when a wave hits and make sure you're not putting other surfers at risk.
Respect Other Surfers
Everyone was a beginner once.
Be friendly, be patient and treat others how you'd like to be treated.
A smile goes a long way.
Don't Paddle Through The Lineup
If surfers are riding waves, try to paddle around them rather than straight through the area where people are surfing.
It makes life easier for everyone.
Share Waves
Nobody owns the ocean.
You won't catch every wave, and that's okay.
Be patient and wait your turn.
Final Thoughts
Surf etiquette isn't about strict rules or looking cool.
It's about staying safe, respecting others and helping everyone enjoy their time in the water.
Learn the basics, be respectful and you'll already be ahead of a lot of people.
